Can dogs eat

Cashews?

In moderation

Yes, in small amounts. Plain, unsalted cashews are not toxic to dogs, but they are high in fat, so they should be an occasional treat of a nut or a few, never a snack bowl.

Why it’s fine in small amounts

Cashews are not poisonous to dogs, and a plain one is an easy training reward. The catch is fat. AKC points out that cashews are high in fat and protein, and that large amounts can cause pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Regular helpings also add calories that can lead to weight gain.

PetMD adds that some dogs are simply intolerant of nut fat and respond with vomiting or diarrhea. Intolerance is different from an allergy, and AKC describes true allergic reactions to cashews as uncommon.

Salt and company matter too. AKC notes that cashews are usually salted, and too much salt can cause vomiting, weakness, diarrhea, tremors and seizures. Cashews also travel in mixed-nut packs, which may include toxic macadamia nuts. PetMD says cashews are softer and rounder than many nuts and are sold without shells, which lowers the choking risk, but chopping them is still wise for small dogs. Cashew butter should be plain, with no xylitol, macadamia nuts or nutmeg.

Benefits

  • A plain cashew makes a motivating, easy-to-carry training reward
  • Provides protein, though a balanced dog food already covers your dog's needs

Risks

  • High in fat and calories; can contribute to weight gain and pancreatitis
  • Salted or flavored cashews can cause salt toxicity or stomach upset
  • Mixed-nut packs may contain macadamia nuts, which are toxic to dogs
  • Whole nuts can be a choking hazard for small dogs
  • Some dogs are intolerant of nut fat and get vomiting or diarrhea

How to serve it safely

Offer one plain, unsalted cashew at first, chopped or crushed for a small dog, and watch for stomach upset before giving more. PetMD's portion guide starts at one or two cashews for dogs up to 20 lb (9 kg) and allows more for bigger dogs, while AKC's view is that one now and then won't hurt but there is no real reason to feed nuts.

Either way, keep cashews occasional and all treats under about 10% of daily calories. Skip salted, honey-roasted, spiced and mixed nuts, and check any cashew butter for xylitol, macadamia nuts and nutmeg. Dogs with a history of pancreatitis, or on a prescription diet, should skip cashews unless your vet approves.

If your dog already ate it

A few plain cashews usually cause nothing worse than loose stools or an upset stomach. Offer water and watch your dog.

Call your vet if your dog ate a large number, or if you see repeated vomiting, a painful belly, loss of appetite or lethargy, which can point to pancreatitis. After salted cashews, weakness, diarrhea, tremors or seizures are emergencies. Swelling, itching or hives suggest an allergy.

If the nuts came from a mixed pack that may include macadamias, call your vet, ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (US; fees may apply). Outside the US, call your local emergency vet. Do not make your dog vomit at home.

Frequently asked questions

Are cashews poisonous to dogs?

Plain cashews are not toxic, but they are high in fat. Salted, flavored and mixed-nut products carry extra risks.

How many cashews can a dog eat?

AKC says one now and then won't hurt, without naming a number. PetMD's guide starts at one or two cashews for dogs up to 20 lb (9 kg), with larger dogs allowed more. Start with one, chop it for small dogs, and keep all treats under about 10% of daily calories.

Can dogs eat cashew butter?

Only plain cashew butter, in small amounts. PetMD warns against products containing xylitol, macadamia nuts or nutmeg, so read the label.

Can cashews cause pancreatitis in dogs?

They can if a dog eats a lot, because of the fat content. AKC lists pancreatitis as a risk of large amounts, and vomiting, belly pain and lethargy after a fatty meal are reasons to call your vet.
