Chocolate toxicity calculator

How risky was that chocolate? Estimate theobromine per kg in seconds.

Think your dog ate something toxic? Call your vet or an emergency clinic now. In the US: ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply). Outside the US, call your local emergency vet. Don’t make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.

How this works

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine (methylxanthines), which dogs clear slowly. We multiply the amount eaten by the typical methylxanthine content of that chocolate (Merck Veterinary Manual figures, using the higher value where Merck gives a range) and divide by your dog’s weight.

  • Around 20 mg/kg: mild signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and thirst have been reported.
  • 40–50 mg/kg: heart effects (racing heart, abnormal rhythm).
  • 60 mg/kg and above: seizures can occur.

Real products vary, some dogs are more sensitive, and fat and sugar can cause pancreatitis too. This estimate never replaces a call to your vet or a poison line — even if the number looks low. Signs can take 6–12 hours to appear.
