What we collect
- Basic visit information. Like most websites, our server records technical data when you load a page: the page requested, the time, your IP address, your browser type and the referring page. We use this to keep the site running, secure and to understand which pages are read, for example by approximate country. We don’t use it to identify you.
- Messages you send us. If you use the contact form, we store your name, email and message so we can reply. We don’t add you to any mailing list.
- Settings on your device. Your dark-mode choice and the breeds you save with the heart button are stored in your own browser (local storage). They never leave your device and you can clear them anytime in your browser settings.
- Google Analytics 4. To understand which pages are read and how visitors find us, we use Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC). It records pages viewed, approximate location (country or city), device, browser and the referring site, and sets the cookies
_gaand_ga_*(kept for up to 2 years). Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. You can block these cookies in your browser or use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on. - Cookie-free visit statistics. Our own site dashboard also counts visits (pages viewed, referring site, device type and country) without setting any cookie. It isn’t used to identify you or to follow you on other websites.
We don’t currently use advertising cookies. If that changes, we’ll update this page and ask for consent where the law requires it.
Other services your browser contacts
- Photos are loaded from Wikimedia Commons and other image hosts credited on each page; those hosts receive your IP address when the image loads.
- Amazon. US visitors may see links to Amazon. Nothing is sent to Amazon until you click; after that, Amazon’s own privacy policy applies.
How long we keep it
Server logs are kept for a limited period and then deleted. Contact messages are kept as long as needed to deal with your request.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU/UK or the CCPA in California), you can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, or object to its use. Contact us using the details above or the contact form. You can also complain to your local data-protection authority.
