Can dogs eat

Pasta?

In moderation

Plain, cooked pasta is not toxic to dogs, but it is mostly empty calories, and the sauces and seasonings people add can be harmful.

Why it’s fine in small amounts

PetMD notes that nothing in plain, cooked pasta is toxic to dogs, though it is not good for them either. Noodles are mostly empty calories, and eating enough pasta to add real nutrition would pack on the pounds. A dog that eats a complete, balanced dog food does not need pasta.

The real hazards are in the rest of the plate. PetMD says pasta sauce should never be given to a dog, along with salt, butter and sugar. Garlic and onions, which are common in sauces, are strictly off-limits and may prove toxic.

Raw pasta is also a concern. Uncooked pasta can be a choking hazard, and large amounts can cause an intestinal blockage, so only serve it cooked.

If a dog eats a small amount of plain cooked pasta, the most likely problem is an upset stomach with vomiting or diarrhea.

Benefits

  • Plain cooked pasta is a harmless occasional treat
  • Soft and easy to chew

Risks

  • Mostly carbohydrate, so it adds calories with little other benefit
  • Sauces often contain onion, garlic, salt, sugar or fat
  • Raw pasta is a choking hazard and can cause a blockage

How to serve it safely

Boil the pasta until soft, drain it, let it cool, and serve plain: no salt, butter, sauce, garlic or onion. Offer it as a small extra or mixed into your dog's normal meal.

Stay within about 10% of daily calories for all treats. Chop long strands for small dogs to avoid choking. Ask your vet about portions if your dog is overweight or has a health condition.

If your dog already ate it

If your dog ate a little plain pasta, no action is needed beyond watching for mild stomach upset such as vomiting or diarrhea.

If the pasta came with a sauce containing garlic or onion, call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (US; fees may apply), since garlic and onion can damage red blood cells and signs may be delayed. Also call if your dog ate raw pasta, or has persistent vomiting, diarrhea or a painful belly. Do not try to make your dog vomit at home.
